Gender Studies Program, Sociology Department, Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University
The Gender Studies Program at the Faculty of Social Studies is based in sociology with interdisciplinary overlaps towards other social sciences and humanities. Gender structures social status while profoundly forming individual identities. Gender studies encourages students to question norms related to gender and sexuality, focusing their attention on analyzing social structures with the aim of unraveling seemingly universal and objective dichotomies of male-female. Gender studies is a dynamic and growing field that enriches social science with perspectives deconstructing routine binaries (nature vs. nurture, biological vs. social, private vs. public, etc.) built on hierarchies.
Our curriculum cultivates critical thinking that fosters deeper understanding of the world we live in and inspires social change. Our undergraduate program prepares students theoretically and methodologically to be able to analyze gender relevant social problems. BA graduates can continue their graduate studies in sociology which offers several courses on gender allowing them to deepen their understanding and critical analysis of gender.
